“surface tension”… work in progress

So, what have you been doing lately?

Have you ever noticed things floating beneath the water… and things floating on top of them… held by surface tension on the water?  It seems to me that life can be kind of like that in general.  You might have something deep going on, but there are always distractions near the surface and/or right on top.

These are 24″ square panels.  Right now I am working on the things beneath the surface, and starting to build the tension for what will ride on top.  As always, I find that the natural world provides me with plenty of metaphor for my internal emotional process.

oil on paper…

It has been a little while since I have used oil on paper.  The technique I am using on panel right now seemed to beg me to pull out some deckle-edged water color paper.  I primed the paper with a few layers of gesso and then about a week later I started putting down some washes of oil… with lots of turpentine.  On top of this I continued building layers with oil paint brushed on, splattered on, and drawn on top with oil stump.  Here are some close ups of the texture.  I will post complete photos when I am ready to share them.
