Thirty in Thirty, 2014: Stirred

Today was one of those days: too many things to do and not enough time to do them. I ran into town with a list of errands and imagined myself returning back to the studio —and a larger work in progress— by noon. No such luck. Price checks. Lines. Ski traffic. Chaos. I stopped at my local deli for a loaf of fresh bread and on the way out, a young couple stirred me. Preoccupied, they stepped out the door just as a pile of snow slid from the awning; covering them in icy white powder. They looked at each other and laughed. “That was awesome”, he said, shaking off and brushing her hair. For a moment I forgot my agenda and their happiness spilled over me. As I drove back to the studio, I couldn’t stop thinking about it. Love makes everything different, doesn’t it?

I stopped at Green River to see if I could find an open place in the ice, as the sun slid low. The water hardly moves now, but there’s this one spot beneath the bridge. I lingered long, trembling.
