Shadow Lake

I chose to work this subtle piece on slightly larger, slightly heavier-weight paper with a smoother hand today. The long, dark lines I wanted called out for a big, beautiful piece of paper.

Autumn colors are really coming to life now. I’m working to clear my schedule so that I’ll have time to dig in.

Shattuck Brook

Do you ever go out on an errand and then suddenly find yourself on a familiar route, but not the one you intended? Are we pulled in directions that cause us to replay events from the past, by some subconscious compass? Or are no more sophisticated than homing pigeons; returning to places by instinct or habit?

Why do I lose myself in a fog only to discover pieces of my history, here and there along the way?

Weatherhead Hollow

When driving back to my Vermont studio on autumn mornings, I’m inclined to take more circuitous routes than I do on summer days. Perhaps this is because I love a foggy landscape, and backroads are less traveled. I can pull over most anywhere and not get in the way of traffic. Sometimes I will stumble my way through a half mile of bramble to get a look at light on a flooded meadow. Such are the delightful things you can get away with on solo-drives, when no one is waiting impatiently in the car.

Weatherhead Hollow.

September Waters V

After a beautiful flight around the Connecticut River valley yesterday, I had the chance to hand-deliver two archival prints to their new home in Orange, Massachusetts. I love that.

Looking forward to delivering an original pastel later today, and then going for an afternoon paddle at Barton Cove. It’s all about the river lately.
